I used to be a terrible gift giver. I could never think of anything and I always waited until the last minute. I always envied people who gave the most thoughtful and creative gifts, but
no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't.
When I started dating my current boyfriend, I was at a loss for what to buy him. I grew up in a house full of girls so besides buying gifts for my dad, I had never really bought anything for a boy before. I struggled. Hard. I waited until two days before his birthday that first year, and just ended up ordering him some clothes. Lame, I know.
After that, I started to attempt to try. I started thinking of gifts months in advance. I started making note of what he said he liked or wanted so that I could start looking for gifts.
But now his twenty-second birthday is coming up and I'm at a little bit of a loss. I already picked up a set of different beer glasses for him, but that was super inexpensive and I want to get him something nice. He just graduated college, and for graduation I got him a leather computer bag for work, and his grandparents got him a beautiful leather watch.
So here's my question: what do you get your guy for his birthday? What is it that a twenty-two year old wants or needs?

my bf is twice your bf's age. I don't really wait until his birthday to get him something. sometimes after I've gone shopping, I'll film what I bought. the gifts aren't even for him all for myself of course he laughs and thinks it is cute how excited I am in buying these cute things. so something that'll make him laugh is what I get. if he doesn't like observing my personalized fangirl squeeing on video, then idk, cologne. I usually get cologne, clothes, dvds, or gag gifts for guys.
"What is it that a twenty-two year old wants or needs?"If you can't think of anything else, perhaps a new girlfriend?
As a guy, my friends and I all share the same thoughts when it comes to buying gifts for guys. It doesn't have to be anything expensive or extravagant. As long as thought and effort went into the gift, it shows us that you care and that's enough. What if you make him a homemade dinner? or make him something with your hands like a pillow or something?
This isn't really a question we can answer without knowing more about your boyfriend. Is he a tinkerer? Try tools or supplies for his projects. A sports fan? Anything with his team's logo, or tickets to a game. Loves to cook? Kitchen gadgets. Have a classy or quirky fashion sense? Clothes and accessories will be up his alley. There are two major requirements to be a good gift giver: personalization--i.e. knowing the person and the occasion and matching the gift to both, and presentation--wrap it up nice even if it's disposable; it makes an impression.
I'm an awesome present buyer because I think hard about what to get them that they would like, according to their tastes and personality (or what I know of it). ideas for your boyfriend:1. Does he train at the gym a lot? you could get him new gym clothes/accesories/supplements that he likes.2. Does he follow any sports teams? You could get him supporter stuff.3. Does he like beer? you could get him a mixed dozen of beers from around the world to try and put it in a gift basket with his favorite treats.4. Does he like reading? Could get him a new book in series he likes or by an author he likes.5. Could buy him an experience like skydiving or jetboating etc That's all I can think of right now, hope it helps
@isitreal_no@xanga - Good tips.
@T3hZ10n@xanga - My favorite is the beers from around the world, I'm waiting for the perfect to person to buy that one for haha I love to get presents for people.
You don't. I don't give gifts to anyone (or allow others to give me gifts) for any reason/occasion. The only person I spend money on is me and I refuse to let others spend their money on me.
idk, i'm not very consumerist myself...i kind of prefer something thoughtful that won't result in more stuff sitting around my apartment.
When in doubt, sex. I think it's sweet that my GF goes through a lot of planning to get me a nice bday gift and I appreciate it but all I really want is her, maybe wearing some lingerie if she wants to make it extra nice. It would've been much cheaper than the $700 dinner at the restaurant she took me to and I would've been just as happy.
If Fab.com doesn't have something for him, nowhere will. I did make the mistake of buying a bday gift for my then guy way in advance. We broke up two weeks before his birthday and I just had it in my apartment for the longest time until I gave it to a friend.
@galliver@xanga - I agree. I personalize all of my SO's gifts. For his birthday I got him a nintendo controller cake because he likes retro consoles. For V-Day I got him a naga mouse because he enjoys mass effect. speaking of mass effect, i got him some collectibles of the characters shortly after for his birthday. just depends on what the person likes. what do they spend their time doing? my guy's a bit of a tech geek so i get him tech stuff. if yours is more of a nature guy, you could go rock climbing with him. not so extreme? walk a nature trail together, plan a picnic, watch his favorite movie, make him dinner (with dessert? make him a homemade cake)...i bet putting ALL of that time into making his day perfect will make him smile more than any material gift will.
Guys of all ages like toys. Not what you're thinking in your dirty little mind. Kid's toys, like remote controlled anything, nerf guns, video games and systems, water guns, balls, gift cards for a pair of new basketball shoes, go cart, bike, food. They really like food. Legos are timeless. You can get those for any age of guy.
You could also do an "I respect you for..." or "I respect you because..." list. Guys need respect like girls need love.
